Swedish Oat Fiber / CreaNutrition

Swedish Oat Fiber/CreaNutrition is a leading supplier of oat bran with high quality beta-glucans. Through clinical substantiation of the product, OatWell® beta-glucan has proven its functional role in lowering cholesterol levels. A scientific panel of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published its positive opinion on a disease risk reduction health claim dossier for oat beta-glucan following an application from CreaNutrition submitted pursuant to Article 14 of the EC regulation on nutrition and health claims (adoption in 2012). Furthermore, oat beta-glucan are included in two additional positive opinions from the EFSA for health claims. The first one is for lowering of post-prandial glycemic response and the second one is for improvement of lower gastrointestinal tract function, which will be published in 2012. The reduction of post-prandial glycemic response relates to “carbohydrate metabolism and insulin sensitivity” which are critical to the management of impaired glucose-tolerance and common in obesity. The improvement of bowel function is a result of the unique combination of soluble and insoluble dietary fiber. The effect is “gut health” and refers to the improvement of bowel function which occurs with increasing faecal bulk.

In line with these established evidence SOF/CN is looking further into other beneficial health effects that may be linked – or not - with the approved claims mentioned above. The term metabolic syndrome is related to a combination of medical disorders that, when occurring together, increase the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and diabetes. We have proved that OatWell oat bran rich in beta-glucan is actively reducing the risk of metabolic syndrome by acting on cholesterol levels, blood sugar and insulin levels, and we have strong evidences that it also acts on preventing obesitas and benefits the overall health status, including immune functions, by acting beneficially in the gut.
